If a doll collector is looking for antique German dolls, chances are she is on a lookout for a Handwerck.

These antique German dolls have large almond shape eyes that are said to be the best and most prominent features. It may have a French appearance but it has good quality because it is made from the best materials.

Antique German dolls such as the Handwerck were manufactured in 1876. This continued til the early 1900s. The Handwerck manufacturing company was owned by Kammer & Reinhardt after the original owner Heinrich Handwerck passed away in 1902.

The Handwerck is found on a ball. This is the composition for the body which Handwerck made as he was constructing the doll. Doll companies purchase the bodies and the parts of the dolls that they are constructing from other manufacturers nowadays.

Therefore, a collector must have a keen eye and determine which are the original authentic parts of antique German dolls and which aren't. As much as possible, they want to collect dolls that are unmarked. They want the dolls they invest in to come from original antique German dolls parts.

Collectors know that there are a lot of “doll hospitals” during the manufacturing of the antique German dolls. If there is a paper sticker on any part of the doll, then these might have been obtained on a hospital repair visit.

This does not make the doll less desirable for any collectors. Collecting it is still a trend but those true blue collectors want their dolls to be as authentic as possible.

In fact, businessmen made profits by buying then selling antique German dolls and there is a difference in pricing when the dolls are authentic and when these dolls have stickers. The average doll collector prefers those attic finds.

They don't want any modern restoration facilities doing something t the antique German dolls because these would make it modernized and not antique.

The hype on collecting antique German dolls has even hit eBay. Most collectors check out the values and prices of the dolls that are sold online.

They compare and check whether these dolls are authentic antique German dolls or they have parts from other construction companies making these less authentic.

There are some collectors who remove the non-original bisque parts of their antique German dolls and continue to scour stores and online sites in search for the original parts so that they could replace these.

Since the doll is connected to a ball, there are chances wherein the stringing cord is already black with dust and can no longer be used but this is what those die hard collectors prefer.

The colorful gold bell bottle named "Karaoke Map" owned by Zhu Jianxin sold on the 2008 RongBao Autumn auction with a final price 39,200 Yuan;

On the China JiadDe 2008 Autumn, a color underglazed porcelain bottle named "Boating on River" owned by Bai Lei was sold on price 78,400 Yuan;

On the Beijing HanHai 2008 Autumn, a Zhen Baichong hand-painted color landscape porcelain bottle sold for 89,600 Yuan, at same time, a fine porcelain bottle painted with tiny Wang Zhiwen calligraphy and landscape painting was sold for 224,000 Yuan by the buyer.

On the China Guardian 2008 Autumn Auction a ceramic figurine called "I'm pregnant" made by Zhou Guozhen was sold on price 257,600 Yuan; A high temperature color glazed porcelain ware made by Li Jusheng and named "keep silence as a perfect gentlemen when watching a chess game" sold on a highest price as 1,904,000 Yuan.

As early as on the China Guardian 2007 Spring Auction, the first special auction for "Modern and Contemporary Ceramic Art" in China was launched already, on which the mainly auctioned arts & crafts were came form contemporary artists of industrial arts in JDZ, and there were totally 79 pieces of artworks were sold out and the total mount of sales is 15,784,160 Yuan, with a high transaction rate of 97.4%.

Among them, a high-temperature colored glaze inlay ware named "Teenage Life" produced by LI Jusheng, one of great masters of industrial arts in China was sold for 1.232 million Yuan, which is the highest price on the auction.

In addition, as there are no technique problems in contemporary art ceramics, the art value of a special artwork could be identified easily by collectors, together with the market is still in its infancy, so the average price of which is rather lower and no bubbles in it, so there is a large space for price rising in future.

Problem with one tooth that is yellow a porcelain tooth?

I have one tooth that is yellow , well part of it from years back when I broke it. The Dentist had put something on that my present dentist says it was only suppose to last for about five years. Now he is telling me that he has to replace both of my front teeth with porcelain fused to metal crowns. I don't understand why I have to loose a good tooth. He says that they cannot match it correctly without taking out the good tooth as well in order for it to match. I think he is trying to rob me really, it doesn't sound right to me. Why can't they just replace the yellow tooth. Not to mention they want to charge me $2500 for the procedure.

History in a Tea Cup

Did you know that your favorite afternoon pick-me-up or breakfast “cuppa” has a history that dates back thousands of years? According to legend, the Chinese Emperor Shen Nung “discovered” tea way back in 2737 BC when some tea leaves were blown by the wind into his pot of boiling water. Now, whether Emperor Shen was actually boiling water under that tea tree or not, the fact remains that tea has been a part of Chinese medical and dietary tradition for at least 1700 years. It is first mentioned in a manuscript dating to 340 CE. Sometime around 400, folks started adding other ingredients to their tea. Some popular additions were orange, ginger, spices and even onion and garlic.

In 479, Turkish traders discovered tea during trading along the Mongolian border. A little over a hundred years later, Buddhists monks returning to Japan in 593 carried seeds and leaves home with them, introducing the Japanese to the “Elixir of Immortality.” Japan, however, doesn’t begin to cultivate its own tea until nearly half a century later. Even then, it is rare, expensive and strictly for the aristocracy and high priests.

Between 960 and 1280, tea drinking becomes popular, first in China and then in Japan. Tea begins to lose its earlier, exotic flavorings. Tea becomes so important to Emperor Hui Tsung that he holds tea-making competitions and tea-tasting events. Supposedly, he becomes so obsessed with tea, he doesn’t notice when the Chins take over in 1125. Another invasion, this one by the Mongols, ended tea’s reign as the drink of the aristocracy. Tea drinking becomes commonplace among even the poorest peasants. Tea sets begin to be made of ordinary pottery and tea drinking rituals and porcelain sets are left to the rich and noble, as tea became a part of everyday life. In fact, the Mongols weren’t big on tea and tea drinking among the upper classes dies out, leaving the drink’s fate to the masses. In 1386, however, the Mongols fall out of power and tea again gains prominence in Chinese courts.

During the 1400’s Japanese Zen Buddhist priests refine the tea ceremony into its modern day from and tea takes on an elegant, almost religious atmosphere, becoming an art form of its own.

The 17th, 18th and 19th centuries are perhaps the most important time in tea’s history, as it becomes a player in both world societies and world politics. It isn’t until 1589 that Europeans even learn of tea, through the writings of a Venetian author. In 1610, The Dutch East India Company begins exporting tea from China to Europe. They market it as an exotic medicinal drink. Tea, however, is so expensive that, as in early China and Japan, only the wealthiest of the aristocracy can afford to buy tea and its serving pieces. By 1635, tea drinking has managed to catch on in the Dutch court, and during the mid 17th century, wealthy Dutch merchants’ wives are hosting tea parties. Tea becomes so popular across all the social classes that many fear it will be the ruin of family life. Ministers fearfully call for a ban on the stuff.

Tea makes its first appearance in the New World in 1650 when it is introduced through the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam. It arrives in England in 1657, where it is touted and sold as a health drink. By 1662, when the King takes a tea drinking Dutch bride, tea becomes so popular among the English that alcohol consumption actually sees a decline. Sometime in the 1680’s, Scotland is introduced to the delights of tea and by 1690 tea is being sold in the English American colonies. By the early 1700’s, controversies brew in Scotland and England over whether tea is overpriced, overtaxed, overly dangerous to one’s health and whether or not tea drinking will lead to society’s moral decay. Tea begins taking over Britain’s coffee houses, replacing coffee as the favored drink. The first tea shop is opened by Thomas Twining in London in 1717. Scandalously, both men and women frequent the tea shop. After the French and Indian War, Parliament decides to tax the British American colonies to help pay off debts accrued during the war. All of these taxes, except the tax on tea, are rescinded in 1770. Colonists decide to boycott tea purchases and in 1773 and 1774, “tea parties,” the most famous of which is held in Boston, are held throughout the colonies. Colonists in Philadelphia, New York, Maryland and Maine dump tons of tea into harbors. Parliament responds with the Coercive Acts, and the closing of Boston Harbor. They plan to reopen the harbor when the English East India Company is reimbursed for the lost tea. The colonists refuse and continue protesting. These protests eventually evolve into the American Revolution.

Meanwhile, back in Britain, tea consumption continued to rise. By 1785, 11 million pounds of tea were being imported. Tea drinking reaches 2 pounds per person in 1797. By 1807, the consumption rate would be 10 pounds per person. This is in part due to the fact that Parliament once again reduced import taxes on tea. Afternoon tea is “invented” by the Duchess of Bedford in 1840. Harrod’s Department store in London begins as a tea wholesaler in 1849. Tea and the British Empire become synonymous. The 1880’s, however, saw America become the world’s largest importer of tea.

The twentieth century saw the introduction of several tea innovations. Iced tea made its first appearance at the 1904 World’s Fair. Tea bags were inadvertently invented in 1908 when Thomas Sullivan, a New York tea importer, shipped tea to customers in silk packages. The customers steeped the entire package and praised him because his tea needed no straining. Today, Americans consume around 140 million cups of tea each day, with an estimated 80% of that as iced tea. Yet, surprisingly, it is still virtually the same brew as that of old Emperor Shen, way back when.

As cosmetic dentistry becomes more popular, more dentists are offering porcelain inlays and onlays as alternatives to metal fillings. If you've ever looked at tooth whitening products in a drug store, and wished your teeth were brighter and whiter, then this article may be a great help to you.

Porcelain inlays and onlays are porcelain fillings and are a quality offering of cosmetic dentists. Unlike metal fillings, they can't be seen when you smile or laugh. Only you and your dentist know that they're there. They're pearly white like the teeth they fill. If you have some old metal fillings, you can have them replaced by porcelain inlays and onlays.

How do inlays differ from onlays?

An inlay is smaller than an onlay. As its name suggests, it lies within the tooth cusps (those small bumps on the top tooth surface). It fills a smaller cavity. An onlay extends over the top of one or more cusps, filling a larger cavity that involved a side tooth surface as well as the top.

The beauty of dental porcelain

Tooth enamel and dental porcelain are both translucent and react with light in similar ways. A translucent substance allows light to travel through it. The light that enters tooth enamel is reflected back off the tooth layer below, the dentin, which is yellow. Light entering porcelain is reflected back off the dental cement used to attach it to the tooth. In both cases, the result is the pearly-white shine we associate with healthy teeth.

Today's cosmetic dentists use porcelain for crowns and veneers as well as for inlays and onlays. If you have a mouthful of gold crowns and metal fillings, you potentially have an astounding dental transformation ahead of you because they can all be replaced by sturdy white porcelain.

Advantages of inlays and onlays over metal fillings

· They strengthen the tooth they fill because they're permanently bonded to it. Metal fillings are not. Porcelain fillings hold the tooth together, pulling on the surfaces they're bonded to. Metal fillings push outwards against the tooth's periphery because they're packed tightly into the cavity. They gradually weaken the tooth, and can cause it to crack.

· They do not react to hot and cold substances in the mouth. Metal fillings do. The ingredients of metal amalgam are about half mercury, with smaller amounts of copper, tin and silver, and a trace of zinc. This mix is reactive to heat and cold, expanding and contracting slightly with each hot or cold thing in the mouth. This puts repeated stress on the tooth, again weakening it over time.

· They will never loosen or fall out. As metal fillings age, they can loosen, but porcelain inlays and onlays are completely bonded to the tooth. They're part of the tooth and will remain so indefinitely.

· They look attractive. The porcelain used is matched to your teeth in exact shade of white. The best dental labs even use several shades of porcelain in the same dental restoration, because tooth enamel, if you look closely, has subtle variations in shades of white. And the porcelain, like the enamel, shines in the light, giving you a young-looking, healthy smile.

· Tooth whitening should be done before porcelain restorations, if possible. Then your cosmetic dentist can match the porcelain to your new bright white.

While shifting how can I transport my pet money plant growing in a vase full of water.?

I am shifting from this place. I have a beautiful money plant to which I am very attached. I have grown it in a porcelain vase in water. My household goods will be transported via truck. I will be flying from here. So that means my plant will also go in the truck. Please tell me how I can transport my plant which is not potted. The vase will have to be packed as it is breakable.

Very simple. Place the vase on the thermocool sheet, pack it with corton box and seal it with adhesive tape. Now the vase is in safe and un breakable condition.
Regarding money plant you put it in a plastic cover with some water and tie the cover at top leaving the top of the plant out side.
Then place the whole thing in a slotted dust bin or wooden box and close it so that the plant can get air and light.

Ancient Chinese Art

Different forms of art have been influenced by great philosophers, teachers, religious figures and even political leaders.

Early forms of art in China were made from pottery and jade in the Neolithic period, to which bronze was added in the Shang Dynasty. The Shang are most remembered for their bronze casting, noted for its clarity of detail.

Fragments of pottery vessels dating from around the year 9000 BC found at the Xianrendong (Spirit Cave) site, Wannian County, in the province of Jiangxi represent some of the earliest known Chinese ceramics. The wares were hand-made by coiling and fired in bonfires. Decorations include impressed cord marks, and features produced by stamping and piercing.

The Xianrendong site was occupied from about 9000 BC to about 4000 BC. During this period two types of pottery were made. The first consisted of coarse-bodied wares possibly intended for everyday use. The second being finer, thinner-bodied wares possibly intended for ritual use or special occasions. There is archaeological evidence suggesting that both types of wares were produced at the same time at some point.

Some experts believe the first true porcelain was made in the province of Zhejiang during the Eastern Han period. Chinese experts emphasize the presence of a significant proportion of porcelain-building minerals (china clay, porcelain stone or a combination of both) as an important factor in defining porcelain. Shards recovered from archaeological Eastern Han kiln sites estimated firing temperature ranged from 1260 to 1300°C, as far back as 1000 BC. In early imperial China, porcelain was introduced and was refined to the point that in English the word china has become synonymous with high-quality porcelain.

During the Sui and Tang periods (581 to 906) a wide range of ceramics, low-fired and high-fired, were produced. These included the well-known Tang lead-glazed sancai (three-colour) wares, the high-firing, lime-glazed Yue celadon wares and low-fired wares from Changsha. In northern China, high-fired, translucent porcelains were made at kilns in the provinces of Henan and Hebei. One of the first mentions of porcelain by a foreigner was made by an Arabian traveler during the Tang Dynasty who recorded that:
''"They have in China a very fine clay with which they make vases which are as transparent as glass; water is seen through them. The vases are made of clay"

Tang Sancai burial wares have become a very popular for of art. "Sancai" means three-colours. However, the colours of the glazes used to decorate the wares of the Tang dynasty were not limited to three in number. In the West, Tang sancai wares were sometimes referred to as egg-and-spinach by dealers for the use of green, yellow and white. Though the latter of the two colours might be more properly described as amber and off-white / cream.
