I was looking at a first edition of Atlas Shrugged for $650, but at another place it was $3000, why is that the case?

The usual answer is condition.

However, "first edition" is a misleading term. The easiest way I can tell you what that means is to think of how books used to be published, using lead type. A first edition was essentially printed using the first set of lead type made to print the book.

What you think of as a first edition is actually the first printing, that is, the first set of books printed. The second set of books printed using that same type are also a first edition, but the second printing.

This is one of those things that gets people in trouble all the time when they start to collect books. Go look at the book terms on ABE, that might help with this too. (I've provided a link below.)

So, the answer above about condition is true, but it's also true that one book might be a first PRINTING and the other not.

where can I buy a Japanese Kabuki Mask?

My husband bought a Kabuki Mask in Japan while stationed there. It was supposedly suppose to protect from evil spirits. When we moved it broke so he threw it away. So I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find a replacement online.

Vicissitude of Japan’s Culture

Culture of different countries is different. One can easily notice the difference either by the visit, i.e. through experience or through learning their history and customs. No doubt, influenced by culture of many neighboring countries, the modern culture of Japan has its own importance. This distinct culture of Japan is resulted from combination of different cultures. It manifests the creativity, independence and strength of humility of Japanese.

Japan culture is rich in the field of music, literature, art and architecture. The art of Japan is well renowned, from its traditional time to modern era. Japan’s animation is known for its artists all throughout the world. Video games, entertainment shows and music play a great contribution in cyber industry. Japan was famous for its music, samurai, geisha and many more. The other uniqueness is in their language, which plays a great role in the Japanese culture. Spoken mainly within the country and leant by many westerners, the language is written in three scripts: - Katakana, hiragana, and kanji. Katakana contains Chinese character while Kanji is imported from China.

Calligraphy, a way of writing characters in a very artistic way, is also a part of Japanese culture. Ink painting or Sumi-e is an art of painting an object. Ikebana is also well known in Japan. It is the art of flower arrangement that is also used many other countries. Japanese culture is also remarkable with regard to theatre arts, as you can still come across traditional theaters in the country. Generally four types of theaters are recognized in Japan- kyogen, bunraku, noh and kabuki. Masks are generally used by performers to depict the characters. Action and dialogues to express emotions are commonly used. A puppet theater highlighting historical plays, known as Bunraku, was a part of Japanese culture during Heian period.

With regards to attire in Japan, kimono is their traditional dress, which is available in variety of designs and colors. It is generally dark color dress, preferably worn by males and at the same time, yukuta, the lighter color dress, is the choice of females. Though these dresses are easily available at several places, but these are generally worn now-a-days on some special occasion. The above stated dresses, theaters, arts and language show diversity in Japanese culture and express their distinct characteristics, which make it one of the best cultures in the world.

The Japanese language is one of the widely used Asian lingoes in the world. Statistics have it that more than 130 million people speak Nihongo all around the globe. Like any foreign language, it is always difficult to learn something that is not your native tongue. Here are a few pointers that may help you learn to speak Japanese in the easiest way possible:

1. Find the time to learn. In any aspect of learning, it is always important that you devote time into studying the language. Assess your reasons as to why you want to learn to speak Japanese and draw determination from there. In order to gain comprehension, you have to have the dedication.

2. Get an audio book that will aid you in your knowledge. The best way to learn to speak Japanese is for you to read and understand the words and their meanings, as well as listen to how they are being said. You can browse the internet or go straight to a nearby bookstore and look for the best book that may suit your needs.

3. While listening to the tape, try to catch key phrases phonetically and notice how vowels are being pronounced. Unlike English vowel accents, Japanese vowels are more pure in pronunciation and have no short sounds.

4. Try reading the words and phrases aloud. You can face the mirror while mimicking the words so as to see the movement of your lips. Make sure that you make a mental note of the meaning of the words as you say them. Memorize simple Japanese conversation phrases first such as: "How are you?" or "What is your name?" It is best to learn to speak Japanese in phrases or sentences so as not to have a hard time translating English sentences word per word.

5. Remember as you learn to speak Japanese that their language has a system in respect to formality and politeness. These prefixes or suffixes are often used to refer to different types of people. Try to also take note of the meaning of the verbs as the Japanese language emphasizes on the action.

6. If you can watch Japanese children's shows, observe how these various phrases are being used. Japanese children's shows often use basic Nihongo words that are understandable and relatable. You may use pointer #3 here and try to respond to their statements based on your understanding. You can also go back to your book and check on new words you have learned.

7. Practice. The more you practice, the easier it will be to learn to speak Japanese. This action will help you memorize and improve your vocabulary in their tongue. You may do so by speaking to Japanese-American citizens in your area. Do not focus on the possibility that you will not be understood, instead concentrate on their responses and go with the flow of the conversation. Do not be afraid to ask if you cannot understand. The Japanese people appreciate efforts of people who try to learn their language.

What happens to a countries quality of export goods when the government controls it's labor?

Most countries are proud of historical exports distinct to that country for historic quality unique to the geographical region, when did some new export of QUALITY come out of a socialist/communist regime?

China's exports are steadily climbing in quality. All those iPhones iBooks iPads, etc are made in the Peoples' Republic of China.

Writing The Historical Novel

For many years, I had written nothing but textbooks and scientific research papers. It was my job and one that I thoroughly enjoyed. Several years ago, I retired, but remained quite active and in demand as a consultant. In the more recent past, a number of people seeking my help began to wonder how much longer it might be available, and began looking for a new source.

Having been accustomed to a ten to twelve-hour day, the gradual decrease in workload left me with unwanted time on my hands. From a newsletter I receive as an emeritus member of the scientific society, Sigma Xi, I discovered I was not alone in this situation. Fortunately, my wife suggested I write a novel. The thought to me was quite unique and jolted my own thought processes. After more than sixty years of searching for facts and condensing all verbalization to minimal proportions, would it be possible to write a novel? The writing method was totally reversed. Instead of condensing all of the material, there would be a need to expand it. The thought became more intriguing the longer it simmered.

Historical novels always have been favorites of mine since I first was introduced to Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe and then to works of James Fennimore Cooper, and others. If I were going to write a novel, this appeared to be the best type to attempt. Furthermore, research is what I do and have done for many years.

By definition, a historical novel is one whose story deals with people and events of a period preceding one's own, and more usually by a considerable amount of time. The definition provides a wide latitude in which to operate, and some writers follow only loosely a historical thread.

To me, a novel in this genre must pick its time and follow closely the geography, as well as the mores, of that period. This does not apply to languages, of course. If the time selected is far enough removed from the present, attempts to provide differences not only would be awkward, but usually also would not be well accepted by the reader. The same applies to dealing with a foreign language. Inclusion of too many foreign words or phrases, especially italicized, interferes with the smoothness of word flow in a passage.

With respect to following the mores of a specific period in time, a bit more research may be required than one normally would believe. Mores vary significantly from time to time, culture to culture, and most importantly, from one geographical area to another. And a bit of explanation of the differences easily may be included in the body of your story. I have found that three or four pages of explanatory text often are well received. It may not be totally palatable to a few readers, but overall, most will enjoy learning something new and, if the material can be adequately condensed and included as part of the overall story, as it must be, it often is enjoyed enough to be mentioned favorably in reviews. Similar inclusions are worthwhile if it aids or clarifies a pertinent bit of history.

Geography is the second most important consideration for the historical novelist. One must remember that the world's topography is, and has been, constantly changing. European countries no longer look as they did even a few years ago. I remember living outside of Marbella, Spain some twenty years ago, in a small villa right on the seashore. I returned there five years ago and could find the place only after an intense search. The area is unrecognizable with myriad small houses crowding the once beautiful and spacious expanse.

So, any persons finding themselves in a similar situation, might keep these thoughts in mind, and prepare to embark on the journey of writing a historical novel. Just remember as an additional aside, that writing about something with which you are familiar makes the task much more enjoyable and considerably easier. Don't try to write about the 'Silk Road' in China, unless you at least have been in similar terrain, and have researched the history quite thoroughly.

Is there a natural way to treat hyperthyroidism in an old cat?

Hyperthyroidism causes my 20 year old cats metabolism to speed up like crazy. He's hungry all the time and getting thinner. The vet cure is an operation to remove his thyroid gland, but he is too old to have surgery. (Most likely wouldn't wake up.) There is also radioactive iodine which is extremely cost prohibitive, especially on such an old cat. The pills the vet gave haven't helped. Is there maybe a natural remedy I could try? Anyone have any ideas?

No there are no natural remedies for hyperthyroidism in cats. If you can't afford the Iodine, or the surgery, (and I agree with you, too big a risk at that age), You may have to face the fact that it's time to let go. I know cats can live more than 20 years, but if you can't regulate with the medication, the surgery or iodine are your only other options. I hope you find something that might help.

Edit: While admittedly there are those who would give advice designed to harm through malice, there ARE those who truly DO care and give sound advice. I have not been in the field for 3 years now, and have not worked directly with a holistic vet, however; I have worked in concert with an Internist who cared for several animals who were in the care of a holistic vet. I am all for alternative medicine, I practice holistic living in my own and my cat's care.
But, at 20 years old, your cat is nearing the end of his life. To have a cat live that long is not unusual, but it is not typical. That speaks to the outstanding care and love you have given your cat.
Euthanasia is never a decision made lightly. One must take into consideration the pet's quality of life with the disease affecting it, and what VIABLE options are available in treating the disease. You could try contacting a holistic veterinarian, and if there is some treatment that can help your cat, by all means; try it. But you should also be prepared in the event that there is NOT any other alternative.

Natural Wrinkle Remedies: Better Than Cosmetic Cures?

Have you ever wondered how women took care of their skin before modern cosmetics were invented? As a skin care researcher, I have to admit that I was curious. I discovered that women of the past were quite ingenious when it came to inventing their own natural wrinkle cure.

But even more surprising is the fact that these natural wrinkle remedies continue to enjoy wide-spread use despite the availability of modern cosmetic cures.

Does this mean that these old-fashioned, natural treatments out-perform wrinkle remedies developed with the aid of modern science?

Before I answer this question, I'd like to share a couple of the interesting natural wrinkle remedies that I learned about while doing research for this article.

Women in Greece, very cleverly, employ the use of a natural ingredient that grows abundantly in their country: olives. Running fresh or pickled olives through a juicer, with a little water, creates an astringent liquid that is rubbed on the face, neck, hands, wrists and forearms.

Additionally, I came across an old French remedy that is said to have been developed during the time Louis XIV. A woman named Ninon de L'Enlos was said to have made a lotion from almond oil, lard and shaved candle wax. To this she added the juice of an onion and a teaspoon of rosewater. The natural wrinkle cure was heated until melted and then applied to the skin at bedtime, and gently rinsed off in the morning.

The legend of Madame L'Enlos says that her face remained wrinkle-free, even at the age of 90.

I don't know about you, but it seems to me that, even though these natural wrinkle remedies may seem a little strange, they make sense at a fundamental level. Your skin, just like your body, can benefit from "feeding" it with the right kind of nature-based nutrients.

This is the main reason why modern cosmetics have had a disappointing record when it comes to treating and preventing wrinkles. Cosmetic companies continue to manufacture their anti aging skin care products with the same synthetic chemical recipe, developed over 50 years ago.

Mineral oils, alcohols, dioxanes and chemically-produced fragrances combine to make creamy, pleasant-smelling products which only "plaster over" lines and wrinkles, giving the false impression of real improvement. Once your face is washed, you're right back to square one.

But cosmetic science is wising up to the fact that the skin positively responds to natural wrinkle remedies. This is why some innovative cosmetic companies are devoting their efforts to researching, developing and testing wrinkle creams made from bio-active ingredients.

Just like the Greek olive treatment, plant-based moisturizers, like avocado and macadamia nut oils, as well as, vitamins, sea kelp, proteins and enzymes are natural substances that are showing exciting promise in the effective treatment of lines and wrinkles.

So the answer to the question, "Do old-fashioned, natural treatments out-perform wrinkle remedies developed with the aid of modern science?," seem to be, "it depends."

If the modern, natural wrinkle cure has been scientifically formulated with natural, bio-active ingredients, and not synthetic chemicals, you can count on getting a product that will out-perform even the best-known, brand name cosmetic.

A Renaissance of Chinese Culture

Over the past four years, under the auspices of New Tang Dynasty TV (NTDTV), a group of artists and scholars have breathed new life into Chinese culture. Together they have produced a world class annual cultural show that is bringing about a renaissance of ancient Chinese culture and traditons. Their annual global Chinese New Year Spectacular is touring the world’s top theaters around the globe. In just a few short years the production has grown from seven performances in five cities in 2004, to 76 performances in 30 cities in 2007. Audiences have swelled, in turn, with last year’s shows landing on Billboard Magazine’s number seven slot for most successful productions. But the real story lies not in the figures, however striking they may be, but in the meaning of it all. Behind the numbers is a tale of tragedy, perseverance, hope, and renewal.

After the takeover in China by the communists in 1949, traditional Chinese culture and spiritual traditions were destroyed and outlawed. Almost all the temples and many invaluable art treasures were smashed and burned. They, the communists, then went ahead to change history books and brainwashing generations of Chinese with party culture, class struggle and Marxist ideology.

Many of the show’s artists and creators have firsthand experience of the oppression of traditional culture and human rights. One of them is artistic director Rutang Chen who went through the pain and humiliation of the Cultural Revolution. He and his wife were separated and sent to the countryside to be “reformed” through hard labor—all for the crime of being artists who played the cello and flute. Years later, when they were allowed to play their instruments again in China’s leading Central Symphony Orchestra, all classical and traditional music had to be scrapped in favor of patriotic songs. Many orchestras were disbanded altogether.

With NTDTV’s shows, gone are the red flags of Chinese communism. Gone are the pirouetting People’s Liberation Army soldiers. Gone are all those lyrics crafted to stir patriotism. In their absence is a cultural space that has been missing for years.

Instead, NTDTV’s Spectacular serves up China’s best traditional arts in all their glory, vigor, and spiritual robustness. Many traditional Chinese instruments are used, and costumes are faithfully recreated from old manuscripts, paintings and pottery. Everything, including the magnificent backdrops, evoke the grandeur of China’s great dynasties and legends of remote history.

You can see it in each carefully placed step of the Lotus Arts Troupe dancers. You can hear it in the deep, heartfelt playing of the Erhu, an ancient Chinese two-stringed violin. And you can feel it in each act—that intangible ingredient that makes the difference between ordinary and magical.

This is Chinese culture brought to life by people who live it. But it’s also culture meant to inspire, ennoble, and nurture its audience. Unlike shows produced in China, where under communist rule today much of the arts is like a plastic veneer, playing to the fancy of the passing tourist, the NTDTV show runs deep—true to the profound, 5,000 year-old culture of China.

Between January and March the 2007 NTDTV Chinese New Year Spectacular tours Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Washington, DC, and major cities in Canada, Europe and Asia.

The game starts you off with the choice of several [base] classes such as warrior, ranger, spiritualist, or specialist. Each has their own unique abilities and stats (to an extent). Your base class is the most important part of your character as it will decide what class-specific skills you will be able to learn later on in the game.

At level 30, you will be able to advance into your second class and gain new abilities. You must proceed to your Race Manager and select [Class Promotion] from the options. Here you will have all options available to you, in other words, a warrior can advance into any class a ranger, spiritualist, or specialist can, and vice versa. However, there are strings attached. Although you can freely advance into any class of your choice, only the class(es) which connect to your [base] class will reward you with [class-specific] skills. These skills play an important role in the game so it would be wise to choose your class carefully.

At level 40, you will be able to advance into your third class and gain new abilities. This is similar to the level 30 class promotion, except your options of classes are severely limited. Your level 40 class options are determined by the class you selected at level 30. For more on which level 40 classes will be available to which level 30 classes, see the race-specific class guides.

The First Dragon

Have you ever been curious about the first Dragon in history? Where it was from, did it have a name? I know I was. I also realized that I would have to settle on the first Dragon in recorded history. Since time travel still eludes me. That is when I decided to do a little surfing, well, a lot of surfing and a lot of reading, as it turned out. Yes, I even hit the hard copy.

At first I was instantly gratified, as I'm sure many have been before me. A lot of web sites that I went to all told me the same... my quest was over...it was Anzu of Babylon, a.k.a Zu, c.1st Millennium B.C. From "Ninurta vs. Anzu" or "The Myth of Anzu". I read the descriptions, and with the exception of a few minor variations, it was this: Body and head of a lion, wings of an eagle (I didn't realize they had eagles in Babylon), razor sharp talons, the beak of a bird with teeth, and an armor-plated breast. It to me was a bit of a let down. I don't know about you, but to me Anzu sounds more like a griffin than a dragon. As I'm sure you will agree from the Babylonian depiction to the right. I also noticed a lot of copy and paste activity between a lot of the sites. So I decided to take a closer look, and actually read the original story as translated from the Babylonian clay tablets. At no time is Anzu referred to as a dragon. In other Babylonian text it is actual referred to as the Anzu Bird. In Sumerian text of the 3rd Millennium BC, Anzu was known as, the Zu-bird, a mythological creature which at times wrought mischief. From - Gilgamesh, Enkidu and the nether world - (Sumerian) : "In its branches, the Anzu bird settled its young." So, as far as the Babylonians and I are concerned, not only is Anzu not the first dragon, but not a dragon at all, and deserves no further mention. I did feel I was on the right trail though,

so I pushed on into deeper study of Babylonian text.

My Reading and the views in other web sites brought me to an older "Dragon" in Babylonian and Assyrian text, Tiamat, creator of the gods and earth. c.2nd Millennium B.C. From the "Enuma Elish" or "The Seven Tablets of Creation". The fact that Tiamat was a dragon is not clear. In fact she has about as many detractors as she does supporters. She is often described as a Serpent type Water Dragon. Except for that fact that she was said to have given birth to dragons, along with a host of other creatures;

"She set up vipers and dragons, and the monster Lahamu,

And hurricanes, and raging hounds, and scorpion-men,

And mighty tempests, and fish-men, and rams;

They bore cruel weapons, without fear of the fight.

Her commands were mighty, none could resist them;

After this fashion, huge of stature, she made eleven [kinds of] monsters."

the descriptive evidence in the tale leaves one wondering to the fact of her being a dragon. She is in fact called a woman in the text, and mention is made of her lips. The following are all the pieces of description contained in the text of the Enuma Elish for Tiamat:

First: (Tablet 1)

unto Tiamut, the glistening one

Next: (Tablet 2)

Tiamat, who is a woman, is armed and attacketh thee.

... rejoice and be glad;

The neck of Tiamat shalt thou swiftly trample under foot.

... rejoice and be glad;

Next: (Tablet 4)

But Tiamat... , she turned not her neck,

With lips that failed not she uttered rebellious words:

Next: (Tablet 4)

Tiamat opened her mouth to its full extent,

Next: (Tablet 4)

He seized the spear and burst her belly,

Next: (Tablet 4)

And the lord stood upon Tiamat's hinder parts

Tiamat a dragon? I leave that to you. I myself do not find enough evidence in the old text to support the fact, but likewise I do not find enough to dismiss her. But, as for being the first dragon, that I can dismiss. (For those of you who enjoy Creation Myths though, her story is the first Creation Myth in recorded history!)

I was scratching my head. Here I was deep in the world that the Greeks called Mesopotamia, home of the Babylonians and Assyrian, the birth place of civilization, and writing, but where was my dragon! That's when I smacked myself in the head. The region may have been the birth place of writing, but it wasn't the Babylonians or the Assyrian that were the parents, they were but meir students...of the Sumerians! Mesopotamia, was originally Sumeria for over two thousand years! So I head for Sumeria!

And that's where I found it! The First Dragon written of, and the first dragon slayer story, and in the first written language Cuneiform!

KUR

Sumeria 3rd Millennium B.C.

"Since the dragon-slaying theme was an important motif in the Sumerian mythology of the third millennium B. C., it is not unreasonable to assume that many a thread in the texture of the Greek and early Christian dragon tales winds back to Sumerian sources."

"Samuel Noah Kramer spent most of his life studying this literature, by piecing together clay tablets in far-flung museums."

We find mention of Kur in three myths from the 4th - 3rd Millennium B.C., (more than a millennium before Tiamat!), In the introductory prologue to the epic tale "Gilgamesh, Enkidu, and the Nether World,"( written on eight tablets - seven excavated in Nippur and one in Ur), Where Enki, the water-god, fights Kur after he learns that The goddess Ereshkigal was carried off violently into the nether world, by Kur. Enki fought Kur from a boat, and Kur fought back savagely with stones of all sizes, and attacked Enki's boat with the primeval waters which it controlled. Unfortunately for us, the author of this tale is so anxious to proceed with the Gilgamesh tale that he doesn't finish the dragon part, and leaves us hanging. It is certain that Enki wins though because he is in the rest of the poem, Kur is not.

See anything familiar; Damsel in distress, knight comes to the rescue and slays the dragon.

The second version of the slaying-of-the-dragon myth can be found in "The Feats and Exploits of Ninurta." (49 tablets) A significant version, due to the fact that it is evident that it was utilized by the Semitic redactors in the creation of the Babylonian Creation Myth featuring Tiamat.

In this version, Ninurta, the warrior-god, is the hero of the story. His personified weapon, Sharur, kisses up to him in a drawn out speech extolling the heroic qualities and deeds of Ninurta to convince him to go after Kur, and attach and destroy him. What Sharur has against Kur is not written in the text that is available. Ninurta leaves to do as asked, but finds himself lacking and "flees like a bird". Sharur though, won't let it go and speaks, reassuring and encouraging Ninurta with his words. "Ninurta now attacks Kur fiercely with all the weapons at his command, and Kur is completely destroyed."

Things fall apart after that. The primeval waters of the nether world which Kur had been in control of rise to the surface so violently that no fresh water can reach the fields and gardens. The gods of the land in charge of irrigation and cultivation, are desperate. The Tigris does not flood as usual, and the river water is unfit for use.

"Famine was severe, nothing was produced,

The small rivers were not cleaned, the dirt was not carried off,

On the steadfast fields no water was sprinkled, there was no digging of ditches,

In all the lands there were no crops, only weeds grew.

Thereupon the lord sets his lofty mind,

Ninurta, the son of Enlil, brings great things into being."

Ninurta then piled up stones over the dead body of Kur, and kept piling them until he had a great wall in front of the land. The wall blocked and held back the raging primeval waters (mighty waters) stopping the waters of the lower regions (nether world) from rising to the surface of the earth. Ninurta gathered up the waters that had already flooded the land and lead them into the Tigris. Which can now over flow and water the fields.

"What had been scattered, he gathered,

What by Kur had been dissipated,He guided and hurled into the Tigris,

The high waters it pours over the farmland."

The third version of the slaying-of-the-dragon myth can be found in "Inanna and Ebih." A one hundred and ninety line poem. (12 tablets)

The dragon-slayer in this version of the story is a goddess, Inanna, curiously known as both the goddess of love and also as the goddess of battle and strife, (She must have been married), and is also referred to in many Sumerian hymns as "The Destroyer of Kur." Kur, is also referred to as The 'mountain,' in the Poem. Did I mention that Kur was also the first fire breathing dragon?

It, the poem, begins with a long passage that extolls the virtues of Inanna. It is followed by a long speech by Inanna to An (the leading deity of the Sumerian pantheon.) (by the third millennium. B. C. though, Enlil, the air-god, had already taken Ans place. Placing this in the forth millennium B.C.) The meaning of her speech is sometimes hard to understand, her attitude is clear though; Either Kur, who appears unaware of, or perhaps is oblivious to, her power, glorifies her virtues, and becomes submissive, she will do violence to the monster. This is part of her threat:

"The long spear I shall hurl upon it,

The throw-stick, the weapon, I shall direct against it,

At its neighboring forests I shall strike up fire,

At its . . . I shall set up the bronze ax,

All its waters like Gibil (the fire-god) the purifier I shall dry up,

Like the mountain Aratta, I shall remove its dread,

Like a city cursed by An, it will not be restored,

Like (a city) on which Enlil frowns, it shall not rise up."

An responds by giving her a detailed account of all of Kurs mischief that he has wrought against the gods:

"Against the standing place of the gods it has directed its terror,

In the sitting place of the Anunnaki it has led forth fearfulness,

Its dreadful fear it has hurled upon the land,

The 'mountain,' its dreadful rays of fire it has directed against all the lands."

An continues with a description of Kurs power and wealth, and warns Inanna against attacking it. But Inanna doesn't listen to Ans discouraging speech. Filled with anger and wrath she opens the "house of battle" she leads her weapons and aids and attacks and destroys Kur. She then stations herself upon Kur, and utters a paean of self-glorification.

So there you have it, the first dragon in recorded history, given to us by the sumerians.

"The Sumerians were a non-Semitic, non-Indo-European people who lived in southern Babylonia from 4000-3000 B.C.E. They invented cuneiform writing, and their spiritual beliefs influenced all successive Near Eastern religions, including Judaism, Christianity and Islam."

In closing let me say that the Sumerians gave us writing, they gave us culture, but most of all they gave us dragons. We should give them a moment of silence.

Strong vibrant colours from exotics and sculptured sturdy shapes, with berries and foliage, as well as roses, are becoming ever more popular for women to purchase and send to men.

Many people use Valentines flowers to send hidden meanings and messages. The tradition of this dates back to Victorian times when suitors would use flowers to send coded messages to their lovers. Roses are undoubtedly the most popular choice of flower to send on Valentine's Day, folklore says that sending ten roses means 'you are perfect', a dozen roses sent 'be mine' and for those who push the boat out and buy two dozen roses are saying 'forever yours'. The colour of the roses sent also has hidden meanings, chose carefully to send the right message! People do send flowers other than roses on Valentines Day. There are a variety of spring flowers which also come in various shades of reds and pinks if the traditional Valentine's colours are to be adhered to, however, it has recently become very trendy to send huge bouquets of spring flowers with a variety of vibrant colours or a posy of highly scented seasonal flowers including narcissus, lilac and lily-of-the-valley.

For the more adventurous an antirrhinum shaped like a giant love-heart is available in white, pink and lime green and a 'saucy' glossy lip-stick red coloured . The flower surrounds a phallic shaped creamy coloured beacon and should certainly let your Valentine exactly how you are feeling!

The exotic and rarely seen orchids such as Oncidium with a mass of small butterfly shaped flowers or Paphiopedilum, the slipper orchid, have become the most glamorous flowers for celebrities to be seen giving and receiving this season. Other exotics and tropical flowers, Bird of Paradise with its unmistakable large blue and orange flowers or the tall, highly perfumed Tuberose make a real statement of individualism and uniqueness sent as Valentine's flowers.

Where can I sell my real Japanese Kimono?

My brother bought one when he was stationed overseas and it has never been worn. Where can I sell it and not get ripped off?

Okay, like everyone else has said, eBay is your best bet. I don't sell on eBay, but I buy a lot of my kimono there, so I have some suggestions for you from a buyer's point of view:

- Before you sell, do a LOT of research. See what your competition is up to (and trust me, you have a lot of competition). See what their kimono go for, especially the ones they sell that are most like yours. Research your own kimono too, so you know what kind it is before you sell it. This will help potential buyers because they'll be better able to tell if your kimono fits their needs, and it will help you because you'll have a more realistic idea of what you could make on your kimono. There's no point in you looking forward to getting furisode-worthy prices if what you have is actually a komon.
- Research will also help you figure out if there's anything special about your kimono that you might want to mention in the listing. For example, if you have a ro or sha-silk kimono, you might want to mention it because those kinds of kimono can be harder to find.
- Take and post a LOT of pictures of your kimono. At the very least, show a back view of it fully opened (like these pictures: http://www.ichiroya.com/item/list/002/ ), some close-ups of the pattern, and close-ups of ALL flaws, even the tiniest ones. If you can include more pictures, you might also show a front view of the kimono closed as though being worn, or some pictures of the kimono being worn.
- When you show the flaws, use something to give an idea of scale. Some people just point with a fingertip or a pencil tip. Some people use small pieces of brightly-colored paper and mention how big it is (e.g. 1/2 inch, 1 inch, whatever). I've even seen people use coins. Flaws include stains, snags, holes, or places where a design's paint or gold leafing might be peeling or flaking.
- Speaking of pictures, you need to give some thought to where and how you take the pictures. I recommend natural light or the closest to natural light you can, along with a fairly plain background for your kimono.
- Start with a low bidding price (but feel free to stick a higher buy-it-now price on the kimono too). I've noticed that when lesser-known sellers have high starting bids on their items, the items often don't sell right away and have to be re-listed. of course there's no guarantee that an item with a lower starting price won't have the same fate, but sometimes a very high start price can scare potential bidders away, especially if they aren't familiar with the seller.
- Take a LOT of measurements, and post them. Measurements buyers often like to see are the length, the area between the shoulders, the wingspan (area from wrist opening to wrist opening), sleeve length, and hip measurement. If you don't know the hip measurement, you could measure across the bottom hem instead. For people who plan on wearing kimono instead of just displaying them, these measurements are essential, especially the length, hip size, and wingspan.

ETA: I forgot to mention...when you take pictures to post, one of your pictures should be a view of the kimono open so people can see the inside. That way people can see the lining and its condition, if there even is a lining. This is important because, for people who wear kimono, the presence or absence of lining is one of the things that determines the season(s) it would be okay to wear the kimono. Plus, it's just a good idea to show the quality of the entire piece, and that includes the inside (even if there is no lining).

Real Japanese Car Ingenuity

Whether the body style is a sedan, coupe or SUV, a Toyota's bodywork can provide the needed protection for internal car parts that directly affect the car's performance. This helps to preserve the integral structure of the vehicle. Other body parts like the door handles are tasked to make the occupants' access to the vehicle easier. They also offer the simplest solution for the safety of the passengers. On the other hand, the streamlining of the vehicles is determined by the fenders because their shape is crafted specifically to harness the power of the wind against the capacity of the engine. Toyota has also made its contribution to the racing world. Its representative cars were adorned with fenders and fender skirts, and the bumpers, shaped to attain the car's speed.
